Too Busy to See God?

June 26, 2024

I was out for my usual morning walk, which includes a section of boardwalk and forest that passes through a marsh. I’ve been following this path for years now, so I’m very used to the scenery. It’s still breathtaking to walk through the woods and marvel at God’s creation.

But this one day I was feeling a bit lost. Truthfully, a little bit down. I wasn’t really sure why. I always walk at a pretty good clip, using this as a form of exercise. It’s also a great mental and spiritual health boost. Many of my inspirations for writing are hatched on these walks.

As I strode along the boardwalk, tall bulrushes lining the way, I glimpsed a spot of colour. I had never before seen anything brightly coloured along this path. It was usually a wall of green leaves, their brown tufted heads towering above. But here was a spot of colour. I couldn’t believe it! A beautiful, large pink flower rested its petals on a sheltered area of the pond, right beside the boardwalk. I had never seen water lilies along here, and I haven’t seen another since.

I’m reminded of Moses. He was busy, tending his sheep, like he had done for 40 years. One day, something caught his eye. He turned away from tending his sheep so that he could see this unusual phenomenon. A bush was burning, but was not consumed. God, himself, spoke to Moses from there. That turning, away from his usual routine and towards God, changed his life forever.

God told Moses to take off his shoes as he was standing on holy ground. He then gave Moses a new purpose. His identity was changed from being a murderer and a shepherd, into being one of the key figures God used to lead his people out of their slavery in Egypt into the Promised Land.

Are we too busy in life with our usual routines to see God? To see how he is working in the world. To see what he wants us to do, how he wants to use us for his kingdom. To see how much he loves us and gives purpose to our lives.

I think back on the water lily I saw that day. What was God wanting to reveal to me? What did he want me to see? How did he want to use me?

For one, I saw how beautiful God’s creation is. I also saw how important I am to him, not because of who I am, but because of his great love for me. When I’m feeling lost or down, he reminds me of his presence in marvelous ways. He continues to work in me, transforming me and giving purpose to my life.

Whatever task God gives me to do, I can do it with his strength and guidance. Just like he promised to be with Moses and help him with the task he was given, God is right there with me, helping me do his will.

I am his holy ground. He dwells within me. This is so hard to fathom! Unlike Moses, who had to go to meet with God, as a believer I have God the Holy Spirit living inside me. How much more direction could I ask for? My part is to humble myself before him, prayerfully consider the task he’s given me, and with confidence go forth to obey, trusting him all the way. I need to keep looking for the water lilies.
